IT’S confirmed public univerisity students will get the opportunity to learn from CEOs starting September.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin presented appointment letters to 14 CEOs under the CEO Faculty Programme on Tuesday.
This brings the total to 23, as nine had already agreed to take part and had been commissioned at the launch of the Malaysia Education Blueprint (Higher Education) earlier last month.
These renowned figures, including Khazanah Nasional group managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, Media Prima Berhad chairman Tan Sri Johan Jaafar and AirAsia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, will take part in guest lectures, panel discussions and co-teach in universities across the country.
“We are still working out the details for the programme so that these CEOs can begin teaching at public universities by the upcoming September semester,” said Muhyiddin.
One of these CEOs is PKT Logistics Group chief executive officer Datuk Michael Tio, who will be teaching logistics supply chain and entrepreneurship.
“I have been championing the logistics company for some time and hope to create awareness on the logistics industry,” he said.
Tio said the 30 hours allocated for the programme is not a lot and his main aim is to inspire the students.
He added that he has been involved in mentoring students for some time. Mostly through Facebook where he is quite active.
Tio is the only CEO in the programme from the logistics sector.
Muhyiddin announced this at the Putrajaya Higher Education Delivery Task Force launch.
He will chair the task force, which has been set up to ensure that the blueprint will be carried out smoothly.
“It is important that all sectors come together to ensure its success”.
But, he said there “needs to be a sense of urgency”, so that the blueprint initiatives are not delayed.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, promised that he, together with Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, will give their “unwavering support” to the blueprint’s initiatives.
Education Ministry secretary-general II Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang, who also spoke at the launch, said higher education institutions in Malaysia were recently ranked at 27 out of 50 countries.
In the UK-based Universitas 21 Ranking of National Higher Education Systems, Malaysia had shown an improvement from last year, when it was ranked 28.
The rankings are based on the university’s environment across four areas resources, environment, connectivity and output.
“The challenge is for us to be more productive, increasing our output to match the resources poured in to our universities.
“There is still a lot of room for improvement”, he said.
This can be achieved through a more effective, efficient and competitive higher education exosystem, added Prof Zaini, who helmed the team who came up with the blueprint.
The first phase of the blueprint, to be implemented throughout this year, is focused on high-priority initiatives. he said.
These are all part of the University Transformation Programme developing new funding formulae, massive open online courses in certain subjects, transforming the technical and vocational education and training programmes, and the CEO Faculty programme.
