SHAH ALAM: PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd plans to invest RM1bil in the next five years to expand its state-of-the-art warehouses to five million sq ft at selected locations in Malaysia.
Group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Michael B.Y. Tio said PKT Logistics had built about 780,000 sq ft and 200,000 sq ft warehouses in Shah Alam and Rantau Panjang respectively.
“We plan to increase our presence in the growth areas of the economic corridors.
“Our warehouse in Shah Alam has been fully taken up. Thus we are confident with our growth trajectory to build five million sq ft of warehouses in the next five years,” he said after the company’s Hari Raya open house celebration.
PKT Logistics is one of the few local logistics services providers in the country that offer fourth-party logistics (4PL) services via its “concept one logistics hub warehouses”.
PKT Logistics’ “The Waves” and “The Ship” warehouses were built with the emphasis on green and environment concept with internationally recognised security features.
Another warehouse being built is “The Lighthouse” scheduled for completion in 2012.
The investment for the three warehouses is about US$50mil or RM160mil.
Datuk Jalilah Baba, former Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) director-general, who is PKT Logistics new chairman, was also present at the celebration.
Jalilah said local logistics companies needed to grow and expand fast to take advantage of the multinational corporations (MNCs) that were investing in Malaysia.
“But they need to advance to the next level to provide 4PL and 5PL services to these international manufacturers.
“For PKT, we are rendering 4PL services that not only handle the transportation and distribution of goods but also offer sub-assembly, procurement and consultancy.
“We have attracted a lot of international manufacturing companies to this country. The Government could play a role in promoting local logistics services providers to these international manufacturers,” she said.
Jalilah added that the Government could impose a promotion to MNCs to use the services of local logistics providers in the first few years of their operation here.
“This will enable the MNCs to gauge the reliability of local logistics companies, some of which have advanced to provide 4PL services,” she said.
Meanwhile, Tio said he was looking forward to the company’s listing, scheduled in the first half of next year.
PKT Logistics had appointed RHB Investment as its principal adviser.
“Furthermore, based on the surging demand and our expansion plan, we target to hit RM1bil revenue in three years,” he said.
At the Hari Raya open house celebration, the group donated RM50,000 to five villages located near to its warehouses and launched a RM500,000 PKT Logistics Educational Fund for students who could not afford to further their studies.
